Online dating travel-style!
I was carrying out some research on La Gomera for work and I have to say, I'm smitten.
Of course, a bit like on-line dating, it may have seduced me with some fancy words and artistic photos, and in reality be a little less appealing. Nonetheless, I'm determined to see La Gomera in the flesh.
I'm not the only one to be taken with this little island just off the coast of Tenerife. It has been described as magical, fascinating and (slightly more boringly) scientifically interesting. UNESCO have made it a World Heritage Site and protected the whistling language native to the island, Silbo Gomero.
By all accounts you can become a child again exploring the island along the 650 kilometres of trails; move from black sand beaches to ancient forests with babbling streams through deep ravines and palm-filled valleys. The island is quite literally a paradise and home to species that have disappeared elsewhere in the world, making it a valuable Biosphere Reserve. The Garajonay National Park is absolutely unique with prehistoric vegetation and laurel forests.
The north of La Gomera is home to Agulo. With its cobbled-streets and natural viewing point overlooking the Atlantic towards Tenerife and Mount Teide, the town is the essence of the island; whilst the capital San Sebastian is known for being the final port of call for Christopher Columbus before he hit dry land just over a month later and America became known to Europe.
Now food is all important. La Gomera has a selection of one of my favourite foods - cheese. Made primarily from goat's milk, the cheeses vary from creamy mild-tasting soft cheeses to the stronger cured varieties. A small island that offers a variety of cheeses - what's not to love?
Then there's honey, palm syrup, mojos (the spicy dip often served with bread as a starter but versatile enough to reserve a place in any kitchen), and Gofio - a blend of toasted cereals - amongst many others. There are also a number of wines and liqueurs to be tempted by...
I'm definitely falling in love.
